Houston -- Two student-athletes from the high school ranks have signed letters of intent with the University of Houston soccer program for the 2001-2002 school year Cougar head coach Bill Solberg announced on Thursday (February 8).

The signees include Leslie Guevara of Houston and Tamara Hawkins of Plano, Texas.

Hawkins, a 5-2 center midfielder from Plano Senior High School, was a member of the 2000 All-District team as a junior. During her four years as a Wildcat, Hawkins helped her team to an impressive 45-17-9 record overall. Currently, she leads Plano in scoring and ranks among the team's top three players in assists. Off the field, Hawkins also excelled in the classroom maintaining a 3.8 grade point average while earning a Who's Who Among High School Students nomination.

"Tamara is the most creative and crafty midfielder I have seen this year," said Solberg. "She has unbelievable vision on the field and she will definitely bring high intensity and a new level of play to our team."

Leslie Guevara is a 5-6 forward currently in her senior season at Sam Houston High School. The four-year varsity letterwinner was named All-District during each of her seasons with the Tigers. As a sophomore in 1999, Guevara earned District MVP honors and ranked second among All-Greater Houston players in goals scored. In 2000, she returned to the field and claimed that same scoring title. At time of press, Guevara leads Sam Houston High School with 29 goals and four assists in only seven games. She is also an excellent student who boasts a 4.0 grade point average.

"Leslie has the amazing ability to beat players one-on-one," commented Solberg. "She is a natural goal scorer and a very hard worker who will bring excitement to an already awesome forward line."

The two will enroll at UH in the fall of 2001. Their first season of competition will begin in the fall of 2001.
