HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to the Mexican Under-20 National Team in exhibition play Sunday in front of 1,208 fans at Robertson Stadium.

Despite a 31-6 advantage on shots, Houston held Mexico without a goal for the first 78 minutes of the game. Mexico's Charlyn Corral scored two goals 10 minutes apart in the 79th and 88th minute, respectively.

"It was a great atmosphere today," head coach Susan Bush said. "It's the kind of environment that you love to play and coach in. I was very pleased with how we played defensively. Giving up the two late goals was disappointing, but overall we overcame a lot of injuries and played well."

Corral's first score came on a service up the middle from Dinora Garza which she volleyed to the left of Scott. Her second came off a pass from Alexa Viera. With her back to goal, Corral received the ball at her feet, turned, face the net and shot the ball in the right corner.

The Cougars went down to 10 players in the 62nd minute after Brittney Pfeiffer (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin HS) was whistled for her second yellow card of the game.

Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS), playing on an injured hip, was under all-out siege for the afternoon, facing 31 shots including 21 in the second half. She made 13 saves including stopping three breakaway attempts in the first half.

"Shelby was outstanding today," Bush said. "She has missed some time due to her injury but she looked great out there today. For her to step up her level of play against some great competition speaks volumes about our potential for the coming season."

The Cougars had only 12 players suited up for the game due to a rash of injuries. Christine Nieva (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS/Arizona State) was in attendance, but is currently in Olympic Residency Camp with the Mexican National Team and was not eligible to play.

Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) and Nikki Echeverria (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) tallied all six of UH's shot attempts. Rodriguez had four shots including UH's lone shot on goal while Echeverria had two shots.

Wendy Espejel made one save in the first half and Selma Hernandez played the second for Mexico.

Corral tallied 10 shots while Liliana Mercado had five and Stephany Mayor had three attempts.
