Former Soccer Player Sophia Mundy To Play Professionally In Iceland
May 11, 2007 HOUSTON - Former University of Houston soccer player Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas) has signed a contract to play professionally with Afturelding in Reykjavik, Iceland. Afturelding, coached by Gareth O'Sullivan, is a member of that countries' Women's Premier Division with the season running from May to late September. Following the season, Mundy will return to UH to complete the final nine hours of her degree in health and nutrition. Mundy will travel to Reykjavik this weekend to begin preparations for the team's first match, scheduled on May 22 against Valur. Mundy tallied 24 career goals in a two-year period at UH, three off the school record of 27, and also closed out her career with 60 career points, three shy of the school mark of 63. She earned First Team All-Conference USA honors twice, the first player in program history to do so. She was also named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25, 2006 and earned the 2006 C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honor. This past season, Mundy was UH's leading scorer this season with 10 goals, seven assists and 27 points. She led C-USA in shots (93) and shots per game (4.89) and also holds the UH career record for shots (188) and shots on goal (96). Mundy also holds three school single-game records and has had five-career multiple-goal games. She was an adidas/NSCAA All-Central Region Third Team honoree in 2005. During the summer of 2006, she trained with the U.S. U-21 National Team, becoming the first Houston player to achieve that honor. "I am very excited about the move and think it will be a great opportunity for me and my career," Mundy said. "It will be challenging getting acclimated to the culture, weather, and soccer experience over there. But, it's important to learn from different coaches, players and styles of play if you want to succeed. The opportunity to play overseas came about through several Conference USA coaches and former UH head coach Bill Solberg. "Coach O'Sullivan has some ties throughout the league," Mundy said. "He spoke to a number of head coaches in C-USA as well as coach Solberg. They all had some nice things to say about me and my game. I'm grateful for the chance to continue playing." Mundy, who will achieve one of her longtime goals of playing professionally, has her eyes set on the eventual goal of returning to the U.S. to continue her pro career. "If I'm able to succeed at Afturelding, it could open the door for me to play professionally here when the women's pro league returns in April, 2008," Mundy said. "The best soccer in the world is played here in the United States and that's my next goal; to play in the new women's pro league. I want to play professionally as long as my body will allow it. Hopefully this experience is just the beginning of a long journey."
