HOUSTON – Nine matches inside the Carl Lewis Complex and a pair of road trips to California and Colorado highlight the 2018 Soccer schedule that Head Coach Diego Bocanegra and staff unveiled Wednesday afternoon.
“As we look forward to our second season as a coaching staff, we can’t wait for it to begin,” said Bocanegra. “We get the opportunity to play in five different states outside of Texas and visit several different parts of the country. This gives our out of state players a chance to play closer to home in front of their families. In addition it allows is to grow our UH fan base and reconnect with former alumni.
As always, the American Athletic Conference will be a huge task and the highlight of our season. We feel much improved, but we know that every team across the board will also continue getting better. This is what makes our conference so great and we look forward to the challenge.”
Following an exhibition match against Stephen F. Austin (Aug. 12), Houston will kick off its second season under the direction of Bocanegra on the road against Houston Baptist on Aug. 17 and Aug. 19 against Southland Conference Champion Lamar. This will be the second time in five seasons that the Cougars have kicked off their season on the road.
Houston will return home on Aug. 24 to take on SWAC opponent Prairie View A & M before taking on Incarnate Word in San Antonio Aug. 26. The Cougars will then embark on a two-match road swing to California for the second consecutive season when the team faces California Baptist (Aug. 31) and UC Riverside (Sept. 2).
On Aug. 7 Houston will return to the Carl Lewis Complex to face Sam Houston State and McNeese State on Aug. 9 before heading north to Colorado Springs for matchups with Air Force (Aug. 13) and Colorado College (Aug. 16) to close out its non-conference slate.
For the first time since the 2016 Houston will open American Athletic Conference play at home when its takes on Connecticut (Sept. 20) and Temple (Sept. 23). The Cougars return home the following weekend to face East Carolina (Sept. 27) and Cincinnati (Sept. 30), both of whom the Cougars defeated last season.
Houston will open October with matches on the road against Memphis (Oct. 4) and Tulsa (Oct. 7) before sitting out the next weekend due to its bye-week. The Cougars will return to the pitch on Oct. 18 with matches against USF and UCF on Oct. 21. The Cougars will conclude the regular-season Oct. 26 when conference rival SMU travels to Houston for the season finale.
Postseason play will commence on Oct. 31 with the American Athletic Conference Championship that goes through Nov. 4.
