Cougar Soccer lands final two signees
Aug. 7, 2001
Houston, Tx - Two student-athletes from the high school ranks have signed letters of intent with the University of Houston soccer program for the 2001-2002 school year Cougar head coach Bill Solberg announced on Wednesday (June 21). The signees include Sherika Hardaway of Sparks, Nevada and Veronica Saavedra of Friendswood.
Saavedra, a member of the 2001 State Championship Friendswood High School soccer team, is a 5-3 midfielder who earned all-district 19-4A MVP honors in her senior season. As a multi-sport athlete at Friendswood, Saavedra earned varsity letters in basketball and track, as well as soccer. Her brother, Joey Saavedra is a senior kicker for the UH football team.
"Veronica is a very versatile player," said Solberg. "She has the athletic ability to step in at any position and make a difference."
Sherika Hardaway is a 5-7 forward from Edward C. Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada. The varsity letterwinner was named the team's Most Valuable Player during each of the past four seasons and nabbed Co-Offensive Player-of-the-Year accolades during the 2000-01 season. Hardaway was also a four-time assist leader and a three-time scoring leader on her Lady Raider team.
"Sherika will be our fastest player on our team next year," commented Solberg. "Her speed and work ethic allow her to put pressure on the opposing defenders, create turnovers and score some big time goals."
The two will enroll at UH in the fall of 2001. Their first season of competition will begin in the fall of 2001.
