Soccer to Face North Texas on Sunday
Aug. 24, 2012
DENTON - The University of Houston soccer team will return to action at 1 p.m., Sunday as it takes on North Texas at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium. The Cougars split the season's first two matches last weekend. In the season opener, they fell short with a 2-0 loss at Stephen F. Austin but followed that performance with a 3-2 win against Houston Baptist in the home opener. Junior forward Jasmine Martinez scored the first goal of the season within five minutes of the match on a penalty kick. Freshman forward Lauren Hodgdon followed in the 21st minute with a ball to the back of the net from sophomore Alexis Weaver, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Kayla Walker scored the insurance goal in the 60th minute. "We're very excited to get on the field again after a good effort Sunday," head coach Chris Pfau said. "This weekend will be a good road test against a team that is undefeated. If we come out with the same confidence that we did Sunday, it should be a very good game. These kind of games will continue to push us and get us ready for conference." NORTH TEXAS The Mean Green welcome back 12 letterwinners, including last season's Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year, junior defender Kelsey Hodges. Hodges has scored a goal in each of the two games. She headed in the first goal of the season and scored the only goal in North Texas' win against Missouri State. North Texas holds a 7-1-1 all-time record against Houston and a 4-0 record in Denton. In the last meeting in 2011, the Mean Green won 1-0. UP NEXT SEASON TICKETS
