Soccer Looks For First 3-0 Start In Program History
Sept. 13, 2007
HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team looks for the first 3-0 start in program history this weekend on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Houston will face off against Grambling State at 7 p.m. CDT Friday before taking on regionally ranked LSU Sunday at Noon.
The Cougars (2-0) are coming off a pair of wins to open the season, against Sam Houston State and UL Lafayette, respectively. That 2-0 start matches the 2006 squad for the best start to a season in program history. No UH squad has started a season 3-0 in the nine-year history of the program.
Islara Rodriguez (Houston, Texas/Awty International School) had a goal and an assist last weekend and goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) was impressive in the net, allowing just one goal in 180 minutes of play. Scott made several dramatic saves, including stopping a penalty kick, to ensure UH's victory against the Ragin Cajuns last Sunday.
Houston and Grambling State last faced off in 2005, with UH earning a 4-0 victory at Robertson Stadium. GSU is 2-3 on the season and coming off a 2-0 home defeat by Centenary College Sunday.
LSU (4-0-0) is off to its best start since winning four straight to begin the 2004 season, while the Tigers are riding a six-game unbeaten streak dating back to the end of the 2006 campaign.
Sunday will mark the second-ever meeting between the two teams and LSU's first trip to Robertson Stadium. The Tigers take on McNeese State Friday night. LSU is ranked No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference and No. 4 in the NCAA in goals scored with 16. They have only allowed three goals on the season.
To make up for the canceled UCLA match on Aug. 31, head coach Susan Bush has added Houston Baptist to the schedule. UH will face HBU at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 in Robertson Stadium.
