HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- After playing 82 brilliant minutes against Houston Friday afternoon, the Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team allowed two goals in the final eight minutes of the match and dropped their C-USA opener to the Lady Cougars 2-0 at Tatum Park.

Lindsay Beiriger netted the first Lady Cougar goal in the 83rd minute. Kara Bullinger tacked on an insurance goal less than six minutes later. The Lady Eagles couldn't recover fast enough and with the loss fall to 2-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. Houston improved to 4-3-0 and 1-0-0 in conference play.

"This is a very frustrating loss for us," said Southern Miss defender Kate Bowles. "We played so good until the last ten minutes. We just had a mental lapse and Houston was able to capitalize."

Southern Miss had numerous chances to score, but Houston goalkeeper Robin Cate was up to the challenge every time.

"We played a good 80 minutes today," said Lady Eagle Head Coach Matt Clark. "The last 10 minutes really hurt us though. Katie Adams played magnificent for us. She had the best game out of anyone on the field. We just need to capitalize on our shots. We had a lot of scoring chances today but came up empty every time."

Southern Miss has Saturday off for travel before playing in St. Louis on Sunday against the Lady Billikens.
