Charlotte Women's Soccer Knocks off Houston, 5-0
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 24) -- In a Conference USA match on Sunday, September 24, the Charlotte women's soccer team defeated Houston, 5-0. The 49ers got on the board early when senior Jill Currie (Shelby, N.C./Shelby) and sophomore Dawn Geyer (Bellbrook, Ohio/Alter) found senior Meredith Mayo (Collierville, Tenn./Houston) inside the penalty box, and Mayo fired the ball past Houston keeper Robin Cate at 13:43. A little over twenty minutes later, at 35:37, Currie received a long punt from Charlotte goalkeeper Jennifer Howell (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) and streaked past the Cougar defense for the second goal of the half for the 49ers.
Just ten minutes into the second half, the 49ers found the back of the net again when Jill Hayes (Huburt, N.C./Swansboro) found Mayo again at the 55:00 minute mark. Currie scored her second goal of the afternoon, again off a long punt from keeper Howell, at 57:47. Junior midfielder Jessica Mays (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) picked up a loose ball and fired it past backup keeper Susan Barra for her first goal of the season at 62:55.
Howell played 68:00 minutes for the 49ers, facing two shots and making no saves. She received credit for two assists on the Currie goals. Backup goalkeeper Andrea Kollmorgen (Montclair, Va./CD Hylton) replaced Howell for the final 22 minutes of the match, seeing her first action of the season.
With the victory, Charlotte improves to 6-4-1 overall
and 3-0-1 in Conference USA. The Cougars fall to 4-6,
1-3 in C-USA action.
