Houston to Face SMU in Dallas

HOUSTON – The Houston Soccer team will take its two-match win streak to Dallas when it takes on SMU in its regular-season finale, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The match has conference tournament implications, with the winner clinching the sixth and final berth to the The American Women’s Soccer tournament.

Cougars Comeback Bid Falls Shy in Regular Season Finale
The Houston Cougar soccer team fell short in a comeback bid against American Athletic Conference foe SMU, falling 3-1 to wrap up the 2016 regular season on Thursday at Carl Lewis Field.


  • Houston heads into the match with a 7-8-1 record overall, including a 3-5-0 mark in conference play.
  • Selena Peters leads the Cougars in scoring with 17 points this season off of seven goals and two assists.
  • Madison Soileau leads Houston in assists with seven this season.
  • Houston’s high-powered offense has four players with at least ten points this season.
  • Rachel Estopare is the primary goal keeper for Houston with 87 saves and two clean sheets this season.


  • Houston posted a perfect weekend after upsetting then No. 21 Cincinnati 2-1 and defeating ECU on senior day, 4-1.
  • Vanessa Almaguer posted her first goal of the season, followed by a game winning goal from Mia Brascia against the Bearcats.
  • Four cougars posted goals against ECU. Jazmin Grant posted the fifth goal of her career and two assists in a 4-1 win over ECU.


  • For the first time in program history, two Cougars earned conference weekly honors in the same week.
  • Grant earned the second weekly award of her career after being tabbed American Rookie of the Week.
  • Rachel Estopare picked up her fourth Goalkeeper of the Week honor, as well as her second this season.


  • SMU is 8-6-3 overall and 3-4-1 in conference action going into the match.
  • Vanessa Valadez is the leader of the Mustang offense with 10 points off of five goals this season.
  • Haley Thompson leads SMU in the assists category with seven this season.
  • Catie Brown is the primary goalkeeper for SMU with 57 saves and six shutouts this season in 1,594 minutes.


  • Estopare is currently 24th in the country in saves per game with 6.21.
  • Both Soileau and Grant are in the top-60 nationally in assists per game. Soileau’s seven saves put her in 20th and Grant’s five put her in 59th.

Houston will await its postseason fate following the conclusion of the match.
