Shelby Scott Named ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District 6

HOUSTON - Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) was named First Team Academic All-District 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine Thursday. Scott, one of four Conference USA players on the First Team, is now eligible to receive Academic All-America honors. Those winners will be announced later this month. It is the third-straight year a Houston soccer player has earned First Team accolades. Scott has made 16 starts in goal this season with four shutouts, a goals against average of 1.87 and 112 saves. She earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 17 after she made 11 saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie against LSU. She is Houston's all-time leader in saves and is tied for the all-time lead in shutouts. Houston (4-10-2, 0-6-1 C-USA) closes out the regular season at the Carl Lewis International Track & Field Complex against UTEP and Colorado College on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday's game against UTEP will kickoff at 6 p.m. CDT. The game time was moved up an hour to lessen potential conflicts with the Houston Dynamo playoff game at Robertson Stadium. Sunday's game will begin at noon. The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
