Soccer's Rathweg, Derieg Earn All C-USA Honors
Nov. 4, 2008
IRVING, Texas -- University of Houston defenders Jessica Rathweg and Stephanie Derieg earned All Conference USA honors, as the league announced the first of its 2008 soccer postseason award winners on Tuesday. Rathweg was named to the All-C-USA Second Team, as the sophomore picked up her first career postseason award. The Spring, Texas, native emerged as the anchor of the Cougar backline this past season. Rathweg started all 18 games as a center back, bringing some stability to a unit that was forced to shuffle players in-and-out all season due to injury. Her defensive presence was integral in the team's six shutouts in 2008. However, Rathweg proved to be a threat in the Cougar attack, finishing second on the club with two goals, including the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Texas State. Derieg was paced on the C-USA All-Freshman team, becoming the tenth player in school history to be named to the squad. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native joined teammate Rathweg on the backline, starting all 18 games at left back and helping the team to 6 shutouts. Not afraid to get involved in the attack, Derieg emerged as one of the team's playmakers, leading the club with three assists and finishing in a tie for second in overall scoring with five points. She netted her first career goal against Stephen F. Austin, scoring on a free kick from over 40 yards out.
