Former South Carolina Standout will coach the Houston infielders
University of Houston softball head coach Kyla Holas announced on July 22, 2013 the hiring of Chrissy Schoonmaker as the program's new assistant coach. Schoonmaker will work with Houston's infielders while assisting in other areas.
Schoonmaker spent the 2012 season at Texas Tech coaching the infielders while also serving as first base coach, base running instructor and coordinating the program's camps. Prior to coaching with the Red Raiders, Schoonmaker spent two years at her alma mater, South Carolina, as the volunteer assistant.
"Words cannot describe how excited I am to begin working with the University of Houston and its student-athletes" said Schoonmaker. "I would like to thank coach Holas, coach Vesely and the entire UH athletics department. It is an incredible opportunity to join such an experienced and knowledgeable staff. I look forward to competing for championships and continuing to build upon the success of the Cougar softball program."
The native of Sebastian, Fla., Schoonmaker began her coaching career in 2009 as an assistant softball coach at Dreher High School in South Carolina after wrapping up her eligibility as a student-athlete.
Schoonmaker was named to the SEC All-Defensive Team as a senior in 2008 and selected for the SEC Academic Honor Roll five times in her career. Schoonmaker started 176 games during her career as a Gamecock while playing nearly every position on the diamond.
