Softball Upends No. 22 Oregon
Feb. 12, 2006
HOUSTON - Angel Shamblin fired a complete game one-hit shutout lifting the University of Houston softball team to a 3-0 victory over No. 22 Oregon opening day three of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational Sunday morning at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Shamblin struck out eight Oregon batters allowing only one hit and two walks. The Davie, Fla. native carried a perfect-game into the fifth inning retiring the first 12 batters she faced. Beth Boskovich drew a walk to start the fifth but was quickly erased when Candi Kloecker charged in to catch a bunt. She fired a strike to Jaci Gonzalez who was covering first base for a double play.
The Ducks (3-1) threatened again in the sixth putting runners on first and second base with two outs. Breanne Sabol reached on a Gonzalez fielding error, but the ball squirted to Jessica Valis who alertly fired a bullet to the plate preserving the shutout for Shamblin.
Houston (2-1) took the early 1-0 advantage on a Bush RBI single that scored Wagner.
The Cougars tacked on another run in the third inning as Nordstrom started the frame ripping a base hit into centerfield. She stole second base and moved over to third base when centerfield Sari Jenkins misplayed the ball. Christa Raley drew a walk and Nordstrom scored when Raley was caught in a rundown trying to steal second base.
Houston added a final run in the fifth when Shamblin poked a leadoff double to open the frame. Shamblin moved to third base on a groundout. A wild throw by Boskovick allowed Shamblin to score making it 3-0.
The Cougars conclude the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational later this afternoon against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First pitch against the Islanders is slated for approximately 4pm at the Cougar Softball Stadium. UH students get in free by showing their Cougar 1 Card.
