Softball Drops Road Opener at No. 16 Baylor

WACO - Ashley Monceaux went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Lisa Ferguson hurled a three-hit shutout as No. 16 Baylor defeated the University of Houston softball team 5-0 in the opening game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Getterman Stadium on the Baylor campus.

Ferguson carried a perfect game into the fourth inning until Katie Bush knocked a single that fell between the BU second baseman and right fielder.

Angel Shamblin fell to 4-3 on the season, surrendering a season-high 12 hits on five runs. Seven of the 12 Baylor hits didn't leave the infield.

The Bears struck first in the opening frame using a one-out double from Nicole Wesley. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Monceaux RBI-single down the left field line.

Baylor added a pair of runs in the second inning to push the advantage to 3-0. Miriam Romero reached on an infield single and stole her way to third base. She scored on a bunt single by Maritza Martinez. Another RBI-single from Monceaux made it 3-0.

The Bears tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth inning as Tiffany and Nicole Wesley provided RBIs.

Jessica Valis extended her hitting streak to 11 games with an infield single in the seventh inning. She is the only Cougar to hit safely in all 11 games this season.

Jessica Valis and Elaina Nordstrom made their 74th consecutive start of their careers ...
