TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Houston Softball fell 7-1 to No. 9/11 Florida State to open up the Easton Crimson Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars fell behind 3-0 during the third inning and weren't able to overcome the deficit dropping to 9-3 on the season. Florida State improved to 15-1 on the year.

Florida State extended its 1-0 lead to a three-run cushion in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run homer. The Seminoles leadoff batter Tiffani Brown doubled to left field and came around to score off Courtney Senas' home run to right.

Facing Florida State's ace Lacey Waldrop (9-1), Houston struck out 13 times and managed six hits. Katie St. Pierre started off the game with a single and extended her hitting streak to 11 games. St. Pierre went 3-for-4 in the game for half of Houston's hit total.

The Cougars lone run came in the fifth inning with Tiffani McKnight (1-for-3) providing the tally on the scoreboard. McKnight led off the frame with a double to right center and was able to score on a Florida State error coming off the bat of Kendra Cullum. Houston loaded up the bases in the inning but a strikeout ended the threat.

Diedre Outon started the game for Houston and suffered her toughest outing of the season lasting 3.0 innings and allowing the seven earned runs. Sophomore Julana Shrum came in relief for Outon and finished the game with 2.1 inning of hitless pitching.

The Seminoles scored in the second, third and added a four-run spot in the fourth to post the victory.

Houston faces Alabama tonight at 6 p.m.
