    AUSTIN - The University of Houston softball team opened the Time Warner Texas Invitational Friday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Texas A&M Corpus-Christi at McCombs Field.

    It was the third time that Houston has defeated the Islanders this season and is the 175h career victory for head coach Kyla Holas.

    Carla Kennimer and Barbie Love combined to pitch a four-hit shutout of the Islanders. Both hurlers gave up two hits apiece and totaled for six strikeouts on the afternoon.

    Brandi Clark, Angel Shamblin and Laura Durham picked up two hits on offense, while Clark and Durham added RBIs.

    The Cougars opened the scoring as Durham cranked a RBI-double in the second inning to score Clark.

    Clark pushed the advantage to 2-0 opening the fourth inning with a solo home run down the left field line. Angel Shamblin scored from third base in a rundown to conclude the fourth when Jessica Valis was caught stealing second base.

     

     

    Jessica Valis put Houston ahead 5-0 driving home two runs with a double to left field in the sixth inning.

The home run for Clark was the 12th of her Cougar career ... She is now four homers shy of tying Michelle Keith for No. 5 of the all-time list ... Haley Valis picked up her second career hit with a single to start the fifth inning ... With a double in the sixth, Jessica Valis is the first Cougar to 25 hits ... It was only the fifth hit on the season for Valis to be an outfield hit.
