AUSTIN - Pinch-hitter Kacie Gaskin produced a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning breaking a scoreless game to propel No. 2 Texas past the University of Houston softball team 3-0 Saturday afternoon at McCombs Field in front of a season-high 1,087 fans.

Gaskin's single was just out of the reach of a diving Jessica Valis and scooted into centerfield giving the Longhorns a 2-0 advantage. The hit snapped the Houston's pitching staff consecutive shutout inning streak at 15.

Cat Osterman struck out 17 batters and compiled her 10th shutout of the season, improving to 13-0, while Angel Shamblin was tagged with the loss falling to 5-3.

Houston (15-6) put runners of first and second in the second inning when Laurie Wagner drew a walk and Brandi Clark knocked a single into left field. Osterman responded by striking out Shamblin to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.

Osterman proceeded to strike out the next 11 batters she faced until Katie Bush placed a perfect drop bunt in the sixth to extend her hitting streak to six games.

Texas added an insurance run in the sixth as Tina Boutelle knocked a RBI-triple down the right field line for the final margin of 3-0.

The Cougars return to the diamond in bracket play against Ole Miss with first pitch on-tape for 5pm. Houston defeated Ole Miss 8-0 in pool play yesterday.

"We'll just have to bounce back against Ole Miss," head coach Kyla Holas said. "If we take care of business tonight, we'll get another shot at Texas tomorrow."
