HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team bested Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1, in the finale of the Houston Red & White Showcase on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 12-4 overall, while the Islanders fall to 8-13. Houston also moves to 8-0 at Cougar Softball Stadium, the program’s best home start since the 2008 squad started 28-0.
Sophomore second baseman Arielle James led the Cougars with a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI and one run scored. Junior pitcher Savannah Heebner also turned in a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while teammates Aspen Howie, Sarah Queen and Tierrah Williams all doubled, respectively.
In the circle, Heebner improved to 6-1. The native of Sedalia, Colo., limited TAMU-CC to one run on three hits while walking one and recording six strikeouts. Junior Presley Bell logged a perfect seventh inning to seal the victory.
2nd | After the Islanders scored one run in the top of the second inning, Houston responded with five runs in the bottom frame. Williams (double), senior shortstop Mariah Garcia (single) and Heebner (single) all hit safely to load the bases before a sacrifice fly from sophomore center fielder Lindsey Stewart tied the game. With one out, Houston recorded three-straight RBI base hits from James (single), Thomas (single) and Howie (double) to take a 5-1 lead.
6th | In the sixth, freshman Charese Wyatt hit a pinch-hit single up the middle. After a fielder’s choice got the lead runner, Stewart and James recorded consecutive singles to plate an insurance run for the 6-1 final

The Cougars will play their first midweek game of the season with a Wednesday tilt against Texas Southern. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Memorial Park.
COUGAR SOFTBALL STADIUM UPGRADES
Thanks to a record year for the Diamond Club, Houston Softball announced the addition of an LED, Daktronics video board (completed) and indoor practice facility as major upgrades to Cougar Softball Stadium.
According to Daktronics, the new outfield video board will be the fifth largest at an on-campus softball stadium in the country and the largest in the state of Texas. The board, which will sit just beyond the left-field wall, will stand 29-feet-3.1-inches tall and measure 24-feet-4.0-inches wide with 576 square feet of space (24-feet by 24-feet) for live video, instant replays, statistics and scoring information, graphics and animations, and sponsor messages. The display features a 13HD pixel layout for crisp, clear imagery for a great view from every seat at the stadium.
The indoor facility, which will replace the current batting cage down the right-field line, will measure 70-feet by 80-feet. The 5,600-square-foot space will feature five batting cages, measuring 60-feet long by 15-feet wide each, with retractable nets for the space to be used in a variety of ways. The facility will have a synthetic turf floor and will be temperature controlled.
In total, the two capital projects represent $1.2 million in upgrades.
