Softball Drops Opening Game at No. 18 Baylor

WACO - Candi Kloecker allowed only two hits but No. 18 Baylor manufactured a pair of runs to defeat the University of Houston 2-0 to open a doubleheader Wednesday at Getterman Stadium.

Kloecker carried a perfect game into the fifth inning but Chelsi Lake opened the frame reaching on a Kloecker error. Pinch-runner Alex Colyear stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tessa Lynam.

Ashley Monceaux hit a foul ball to left field. Brandi Clark fired a one-hop bullet to the plate but Elaina Nordstrom couldn't hold the ball as Colyear came barreling into the plate.

The Bears used a Brette Reagan RBI-single to add an insurance run in the seventh for the final 2-0 margin.

The Cougars (18-8) best chance to score came in the first inning when Jessica Valis slapped a single through the left side. She moved to second base on a Katie Bush sacrifice bunt. Nordstrom knocked a single to centerfield putting runners on the corners with one out.

Christa Raley knocked a line-drive but it was snagged by Baylor shortstop Lauren Parker. Nordstrom was picked off of first base on the opening pitch to Angel Shamblin to end the threat.

Lisa Ferguson improved to 9-2 on the season spraying six hits and striking out four, while Kloecker fell to 7-3 in another tough-luck lose for the Blinn College transfer.

Nordstrom tied a career-best registering three hits on the afternoon.

Houston returns home to open Conference USA action this weekend against East Carolina with a Saturday double and a single-game Sunday.

First pitch for both days against the Pirates in slated for 1pm at the Cougar Softball Stadium. UH students can see every pitch for free by showing their Cougar 1 Card at the gate.



Games Notes
Houston falls to 3-5 all-time against Baylor and against Big XII opponents this season ... The Cougars drop to 0-3 in games played at Getterman Stadium ... It was only the second time in 13 games that the Cougars lost when out-hitting their opponents this season ... The Cougars are 3-6 against ranked opponents and 7-6 against Lone Star state foes ... Head coach Kyla Holas used her 22nd different batting order in game one moving Laurie Wagner from the No. 4 spot to the No. 6 hole ... Brandi Clark also made her debut in the No. 8 slot ... Jessica Valis added her team-leading 33rd hit in the first inning ... It was the eighth hit this season for the Shiner, Texas native that reached the outfield ... Elaina Nordstrom has reached base in 22 of 26 games and became the second Cougar to reach 25 hits on the season ... In the process, Nordstrom added her fourth multi-hit game and tied a career-best with three hits ... Laurie Wagner knocked a double with one-out in the seventh inning to break out of an 0-for-24 slump.
