HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 3-2 in nine innings in a pitcher's duel to Lipscomb on Friday night at Cougar Softball Stadium as part of the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic.
With the decision, the Cougars fall to 13-5 overall, while the Lady Bisons improve to 12-5.
In the circle, junior Savannah Heebner fell to 7-2. The native of Sedalia, Colo., held Lipscomb to just four hits across a career-high nine innings pitched. Heebner allowed three runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out nine.
Sophomore second baseman Arielle James finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior right fielder Maya Thomas and sophomore third baseman Sarah Queen each finished 1-for-4, respectively. Thomas added a run scored, coming home on a passed ball in the bottom of the ninth inning.
8th | With international tiebreaker in effect, the Lady Bisons plated one run on a throwing error in the top of the eighth to score the first run of the game. In the bottom frame, Houston answered with a run of its own to keep the game alive. With senior shortstop Maria Garcia placed on second, junior catcher Brooke Vannoy advanced her to third with a sacrifice bunt before James delivered her with a two-out single to center field.
9th | In the ninth, Lipscomb hit a two-run home run to take a 3-1 advantage, and Thomas scored on a passed ball in the bottom frame for the 3-2 final.
The Houston Hilton Plaza Classic continues with five games on Saturday. Houston will face Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. before seeing Iowa State in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

COUGAR SOFTBALL STADIUM UPGRADES
Thanks to a record year for the Diamond Club, Houston Softball announced the addition of an LED, Daktronics video board (completed) and indoor practice facility as major upgrades to Cougar Softball Stadium.
According to Daktronics, the new outfield video board will be the fifth largest at an on-campus softball stadium in the country and the largest in the state of Texas. The board, which will sit just beyond the left-field wall, will stand 29-feet-3.1-inches tall and measure 24-feet-4.0-inches wide with 576 square feet of space (24-feet by 24-feet) for live video, instant replays, statistics and scoring information, graphics and animations, and sponsor messages. The display features a 13HD pixel layout for crisp, clear imagery for a great view from every seat at the stadium.
The indoor facility, which will replace the current batting cage down the right-field line, will measure 70-feet by 80-feet. The 5,600-square-foot space will feature five batting cages, measuring 60-feet long by 15-feet wide each, with retractable nets for the space to be used in a variety of ways. The facility will have a synthetic turf floor and will be temperature controlled.
In total, the two capital projects represent $1.2 million in upgrades.
