HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team took both games of the Fourth Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer Game against Southern Thursday night at Cougar Softball Stadium. The proceeds from the game benefited the Susan G. Komen Foundation and their quest against breast cancer.

The Cougars improved to 10-9 on the season as the Jaguars fell to 0-16. Houston improves to 4-0 all-time against Southern as they swept the Jaguars in a doubleheader earlier this season which was first meeting between the two.

Game One

Houston 8, Southern 0

Freshman Bailey Watts (6-3) received the win as she fanned a career high of 11 batters in five innings. The Spring Branch, Texas native struck out the side in the second frame en route to her first one-hitter.

Angela Spittler recorded Houston’s first hit with a single down the middle and proceeded to steal second. Unfortunately for the Cougars, she was left stranded when Katy Beth Sherman grounded out to the pitcher to end the frame.

Things spiraled out of control for Southern in the third inning as the Cougars plate discipline paid off. Their patience drew three walks, four hits and six runs. Brooke Lathan blasted her third career home run to center field for the first run of the game.

Katy Beth Sherman led the team, going 2-for-3 and driving in two RBI with her first career triple.

Game Two

Houston 8, Southern 7

Baillie Lott pitched a complete game and picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the season as the Cougars fended off the Jaguars 8-7 in the second game.

Houston fell behind early before building a large lead and squandering most of it in the top of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Melissa Gregson and junior Angela Spittler supplied much of the offense with each players driving in three runs. Gregson went 3-4 and scored two runs while Spittler went 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Southern loaded the bases to open up play and drove in a run with a single. An errant pitch by Lott allowed another run to score before the Cougars could escape the inning down 2-0.

Houston evened up the score in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Reina Gaber and Spittler took back-to-back walks before Lott helped her own cause by driving in a run with a single to left field. Freshman Brooke Lathan followed that at bat with another RBI single to negate the deficit.

Houston hitters struggled over the course of the next several innings. The strong gusts coming in from the outfield helped corral several well-hit balls and turned them into long, harmless fly outs.

The Cougars broke the tie in the fifth inning when sophomore Mary Tyler Dobson reached base on a bunt and a throwing error allowed her to advance to second. Gregson drove her in with a single to left field. Spittler put the Cougars up 4-2 when she singled in Gregson.

In the sixth inning, Katy Beth Sherman and Ashleigh Jones reached base on consecutive bunts before both runners were driven in by a Gregson double that bounced off the fence. The scoring spree continued when Spittler knocked a single down the left field line, scoring Gregson and Gaber, who reached base by taking a pitch off the rib cage.

Things became dicey for Houston as a seemingly large 8-2 lead slipped away in the top of the seventh as three errors allowed Southern to rally. Southern managed to score five runs and give the Cougars the scare, but Lott struck out the last batter and the Cougars held on for an 8-7 victory.
