HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team pulled off a 2-1 win over UCF to win the series two games to one on Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston (16-8, 5-1) turned to Bailey Watts in the circle and the junior allowed only four hits to the Knights (16-14, 1-5) a day after her one-hit shutout.
Watts struck out six batters and gave up only one run and walk to improve to 9-2. The junior has gone the distance and been victorious in her last five appearances.
Leadoff batter Holly Anderson drove a double to right center to start off the game for UH. Kendra Cullum sacrificed Anderson over to third on her only official at bat she was hit by the pitch her next trips to the plate. Reina Gaber singled in her fellow senior Anderson to put Houston ahead 1-0 and the Cougars improved to 10-2 when scoring in the first inning.
Houston stretched the lead to 2-0 in the fourth frame as Jaime Edwards reached base courtesy of a walk and moved around to scoring position off Katie St. Pierre's double. Holly Anderson plated the insurance run with a sac fly for her 16th RBI.
UCF answered the next inning with three of the four hits and scored a run off Mariah Garcia's double to cut the lead in half.
The Knights entered the weekend series ranked No. 4 in the NCAA with 78 stolen bases on the year. The Cougars pitching staff helped minimize the base runners all weekend allowing only 13 hits. Catcher Haley Outon also did her part by throwing out one the two total stolen bases attempts and picking off two more runners on the base paths.
Outon had to find some way to contribute as the junior was limited in her own chances at the plate. UCF elected to intentionally walk the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year twice in each game.
Houston heads to Sam Houston State for a 5 p.m. road game in Huntsville (Texas) before traveling to ECU next weekend for a three-game conference series.
