HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball program began American Athletic Conference play by posting a pair of 8-0 run-rule victories over Temple on Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars and Owls close out the series tomorrow with an adjusted game time set for 11 a.m. rather than the originally scheduled 12 p.m. start time.

Houston (15-10, 2-0) dominated the Owls (7-13, 0-2) on the day allowing just one base runner past first base which came in the first inning of the first game. UH outhit TU 15-3 behind the solid efforts from pitchers Diedre Outon and Julana Shrum.

    GAME 1 | HOUSTON 8, TEMPLE 0 (5) - Box Score
Starting pitcher Diedre Outon allowed her only hit of the game to the leadoff batter before settling in a groove and retiring the rest of the opposing lineup for the second time this season. Outon went the distance throwing 5.0 innings to earn her fifth win (6-5) of the year in her one-hit performance.

The two top spots of the Houston lineup drove in all six runs as Selena Hernandez (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Kendra Cullum (2-for-4, 3 RBI) supplied the bulk of the damage for UH.

The scoring started in the third inning thanks to back-to-back doubles by Hernandez and Cullum. Cullum’s hit sent Hernandez home after Hernandez drove in Diedre Outon with her team-leading eighth double of the season.

Houston’s duo of Hernandez and Cullum each had a two-RBI singles in succession as part of a six-run barrage in the fifth inning to give UH the 8-0 win. Five of the six runs came on a two-out rally after Tiffani McKnight started the stanza with Houston’s third double of the game. An error allowed McKnight to come around to score and left Haley Outon on second base after her first sacrifice bunt of the season. Another Owl miscue allowed Haley to take home on an illegal pitch.

Diedre helped her own cause by hitting a single during the inning and reached safely in all three plate appearances (2 BB). Katie St. Pierre took a pitch to the elbow to reach first and along with Sydney Gerbracht, all three came around to score off Hernandez and Cullum’s hits.

Houston has now won each of their conference debuts as the program posted a 5-4 win over Louisville (2001) to begin Conference USA play.

    GAME 2 | HOUSTON 8, TEMPLE 0 (5) - Box Score
Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as the Cougars cruised to an 8-0 win (5) and sweep Saturday’s doubleheader over Temple.

The first three batters Houston sent to the plate scored and stole a base to set the tone in the second win of the day. UH stole six bases in the game setting a season-high total and one shy of the school record.

Selena Hernandez started the game off by taking first on a hit by a pitch before two straight singles from Kendra Cullum and Tiffani McKnight moved the traffic around the base baths. McKnight and Cullum executed a double steal to plate Cullum and McKnight took home on Jaime Edwards’ single.

The first inning of offensive output was more than enough for starting pitcher Julana Shrum. The Porum, Okla. native, turned in a dominant pitching performance allowing only a pair of hits and no runners past first base to pick up her fifth win of the season (5-3).

The Cougars added a five-spot to the board in the third inning from four hits. Kayla Holland drew a walk and moved to second on Diedre Outon’s single. A two-out rally started when Katie St. Pierre’s single found its way through the middle infield to score Holland. Hernandez (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI) hit a single in two and a McKnight two-RBI single signaled the end of Houston’s scoring.
