ORLANDO, Fla. - Elaina Nordstrom went 2-for-3 with a career high 4 RBIs leading the University of Houston softball team to a 5-1 victory over UCF Saturday in game one of Conference USA weekend series at the UCF Softball Stadium.

The Cougars exploded for four of its five runs in the second inning. Houston used a walk and three hit batters to grab a 1-0 lead before Nordstrom cranked a bases clearing double off the centerfield wall pushing the Houston advantage to 4-0.

UCF got on the board in the fifth inning using a RBI-double from Amber Lamb to trim the deficit down to 4-1. Cici Alvarez added a single and with runners on second and third base, Angel Shamblin dug deep to strikeout Breanne Javier to end the threat.

Shamblin improved to 9-5 in the circle firing a complete game allowing one run on seven hits. The Davie, Fla. native struck out 10 batters against zero walks.

Houston added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Nordstrom capped her career performance with a RBI-single for the final margin of 5-1.

The two teams will conclude its weekend set with a single-game Sunday at 1pm. This afternoon marks the first time that Houston and UCF have met on the softball diamond ... The Cougars are 7-3 against first-time opponents and are 11-6 all-time in games played in the Sunshine State ... Head coach Kyla Holas broke her 10-game streak of using a different batting lineup by using the same batting lineup from game two of the Tulsa series last weekend ... The Cougars improve to 17-3 on the season when scoring first and are 72-20 over the last three years when putting the first dent on the scoreboard ... This is the first win for Houston in the opening game of C-USA series ... Angel Shamblin notched her staff-best ninth win of the season ... With 10 strikeouts, Shamblin is only one strikeout away from reaching 100 Ks for the season and is 18 Ks shy of reaching the 200-mark for her career ... Jessica Valis drew her team-leading 23rd walk in the first inning ... Valis has drawn a walk in six of seven Conference USA games ... The Shiner, Texas native has scored a run in 19 of her last 29 games ... Katie Bush added her team-best seventh sacrifice hit in the opening frame ... With her free pass in the first inning, Laurie Wagner joins Jessica Valis and Christa Raley as the only Cougars to pick up 20 walks ... Wagner has also drawn a walk in six of seven C-USA games ... Elaina Nordstrom extended her hitting streak toteam-best nine games with a bases loaded double in the second inning and grabbed the team-lead in RBIs with 23 ... It was Nordstrom's sixth multi-hit game ... The LaPalma, Calif. native set a career high with four RBIs ... Jaci Gonzalez pushed her hitting streak to four games with a single to open the fourth inning ... It was Gonzalez's second multi-hit game in the last three games ... With a double in the fifth inning, Laura Durham hit safely in six of her last eight games.
