EL PASO - The University of Houston softball team lost a 17-1 decision in five innings at UTEP Friday evening in game two of a Conference USA weekend series at Helen of Troy Field on the UTEP campus.

The 17 runs scored by the Miners (25-14, 4-7 C-USA) in the fourth inning tied for the second most runs allowed in an inning in NCAA history. Ashley Ellis cranked a grand slam and added a two-run double in the frame.

Houston (31-12, 12-2 C-USA opened the scoring in the first inning as Jessica Valis slapped a leadoff single and came around to score on a passed ball.

"We're better than what we showed in game two," pitcher Angel Shamblin said. "UTEP is going to be fired up for the series finale. We need to bounce back and control the things that we can control."
