Kennimer's pitching, Johnson's bat, lead Houston in game two

April 10, 2004

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Houston softball team grabbed the second game of a double header Friday night with a 6-0 win over the UAB Blazers at George Ward Park in Birmingham, Ala.

Brooke Johnson hit her first home run of the season in the second inning with a two-run line drive shot over the right field wall, knocking in Jeanie Davis who had doubled down the right field line earlier in the inning.

The two runs were all Freshman pitcher Carla Kennimer needed for support, as she shut down the UAB offense, giving up just three hits and striking out two. Kennimer improved to 5-2 on the year and the Cougars improved to 27-16 and 6-5 in Conference USA play.

Houston added to the lead with a sixth inning rally for the second consecutive game. Jamie Adams and Kristen Glowacz started the inning with back-to-back singles and a walk to Jenilee Skender loaded the bases for Ray Ferreris. Ferreris took advantage of the opportunity lacing a single up the middle, scoring Adams and Glowacz. Jeanie Davis appeared to have another big hit for Houston, but the ball bounced off pitcher Tara Higashino's glove and hit Jenny Baker who was pinch running for Skender, forcing Baker out. Davis reached first on the play. Brandi Clark kept the inning going for the Cougars with an RBI double and Davis scored when Jaci Gonzalez ripped a pitch to UAB second baseman Beth Mullins who could not handle the ball.

The Cougars will be in action again Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they close out the season series with UAB.
