HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Angel Shamblin fired a complete-game five-hitter lifting the University of Houston softball team past Marshall 3-0 in game one of a Conference USA doubleheader Friday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field.
Shamblin fired her second shutout of the season recording a pair of strikeouts against one walk on an economical 89 pitches to improve to 11-6 on the season, while Christa Raley provided the offense spark going 2-for-3 driving home two RBIs.
The win for Houston (27-17, 8-5 C-USA) snaps Marshall's (24-19, 10-6 C-USA) eight-game home winning streak as the Cougars became the first C-USA team to win in Huntington.
Houston tacked on another run in the second inning as Laura Durham smacked a leadoff double down the left field line. Durham moved to third on a Jamie Adams ground ball and came around to score when Haley Valis cracked a RBI-single to left field giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
Raley struck again tacking on insurance in the fifth inning with a RBI-single in between shortstop and third base for the final margin of 3-0.
That would be more than enough run support for Shamblin, who retired the last eight Marshall batters she faced.
Game two of this afternoon's doubleheader gets underway at 4:10pm CST. Fans can listen to all of the action live from Huntington for free by clicking on the listen live link on the homepage of UHCougars.com
