HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team fell 2-0 to No. 22/23 Tulsa Sunday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston (31-15, 14-4) entered the weekend tied with Tulsa (33-13-1, 13-5) for second in the league standings and moved a game ahead of the Golden Hurricane with the 2-1 series win.
Both teams had five hits in Sunday's pitchers duel between Tulsa's Aimee Creger (18-5) and Houston's Summer Groholski (5-4). Groholski threw four strikeouts in her fifth complete game of the year in the effort. Creger fanned eight to pick up the win.
Tulsa took the 1-0 lead in their first at bat from a sacrifice fly by Haley Henshaw. Julie Kernen made it 2-0 in the fifth inning scoring Jill Barrett on a fielder's choice. Barrett (3-for-4) scored both runs for TU.
Kayla Holland led Houston's efforts with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, starting off the second and fourth innings with singles. Leadoff batter Katie St. Pierre had two walks and Kendra Cullum, Reina Gaber and Jaime Edwards all had a hit.
Before settling down and retiring six straight batters in the third and fourth innings, Houston used solid defensive work in the field to cut down two base runners at third and one at the plate. An inning-ending 5-3-2 throw to the plate eliminated an early insurance run for Tulsa.
Houston travels to Waco (Texas) this Tuesday. to face No. 16/19 Baylor in a doubleheader.
