HOUSTON - Angel Shamblin struck out 12 batters and fired a two-hitter to lead the University of Houston softball team 1-0 victory over Southern Miss in game one of a Conference USA doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
This is the first time in program history that Houston (29-18, 10-6 C-USA) has defeated Southern Miss (25-28, 10-6 C-USA) on its home field. The Cougars were 0-7 against the Golden Eagles entering the weekend.
Shamblin was dominant in the circle being touched up for two hits and extending her scoreless inning streak to 22 consecutive frames. Her 12 strikeouts move Shamblin into No. 4 all-time in a single season with 138 Ks for the season. She is now one strikeout shy of passing Jenny Johnson's 139 Ks during the 2004 season.
The Cougars scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning capitalizing on three walks in the frame. Brandi Clark opened the frame with a walk followed by Jessica Valis infield single. Elaina Nordstrom and Christa Raley drew back-to-back two-out bases on balls giving Houston a 1-0 advantage.
That would be all the run support Shamblin would need as the Davie, Fla. native retired 12 of the final 13 USM hitters she faced.
Game two of this afternoon's twinbill will get underway at approximately 3:15 pm. Fans can follow all of the action live from the Cougar Softball Stadium with live stats provided by UHCougars.com
