BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Angel Shamblin's four-hitter coupled with Elaina Nordstrom's solo home run fueled the University of Houston softball team to a 2-0 victory over UAB Sunday afternoon in the series finale of a Conference USA weekend series at George Ward Park.
The Cougars (36-20, 13-8 C-USA) avoided a weekend sweep and move into a second place tie with UAB (29-19, 13-8 C-USA) in the league standings. The two teams enter the final weekend of the regular season a half-game back of Tulsa (29-20, 13-7 C-USA).
With the score tied at 0-0 in the third inning, the two teams were pulled off the field for 45 minutes as a thunderstorm hit the Birmingham area.
After the delay was over, Houston grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Nordstrom cranked a solo home run down the left field line. The homer for Nordstrom was her seventh of the season and her 49th RBI of the season. The LaPalma, Calif. native is now tied with Arelis Ferreris 2003 mark for second place in program history for a single-season.
Laurie Wagner opened the fourth inning drawing a walk and moved to third base as Jamie Adams smacked a double to right centerfield. The Cougars went up 2-0 on a Jessica Valis RBI-single but Adams was caught between second and third for the final out of the frame.
UAB loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but Angel Shamblin got pinch-hitter Jacy Leon to strike out on a 3-2 pitch to secure the 2-0 win.
Shamblin moved to 15-7 on the season being touched up for only four hits, recording six strikeouts against three walks. Kayla Harris was tagged with the loss falling to 10-6 giving up both runs in two innings of relief after the rain delay.
Houston concludes the regular season with a weekend series against Memphis. The two teams will play a Saturday doubleheader followed by a Sunday single-game. First pitch on both days is on tap for 1pm.
Cougar game notes will follow later tonight.
