HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team defeated USF, 3-1, to even the series at 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2017 American Athletic Conference Softball Championship being held May 11-13 at host East Carolina. The second-place finish under first-year Head Coach Kristin Vesely is the highest in program history as a member of The American.
The victory moves the Cougars to 27-24 overall and 11-6 in The American, while the Bulls fall to 32-22 on the season and 9-7 in league action.
Freshmen Trystan Melancon improved to 12-7 in the circle behind a complete-game effort. The rookie scattered four hits and one run while walking two and striking out six.
Cougars Sarah Barker, Savannah Heebner, Arielle James, Shelby Miller, Sarah Queen and Maya Thomas all singled. Thomas highlighted the offense with a two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the second inning.
2nd | Houston plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Queen singled down the left-field line. After Queen advanced to second base on a groundout in the next at bat, Barker put runners at the corners with a single to center field. A fielding error one play later allowed Queen to score to give the Coogs a 1-0 lead. Thomas then plated Barker and James on a single up the middle to cap the three-run frame.

The Cougars will go for the series win in a noon first pitch Sunday to close the regular season. “Senior Weekend” will conclude with Miller being honored before the game.
