“We’re slowly starting to see the things we teach in practice come through in a game. As coaches, that’s what we want to happen right now,” said head coach Kyla Holas. “We’re doing some things offensively, on the mound and defensively that it took us a while to implement with all the new faces. With these two games today, we’re starting to see that consistency out there which is great to see.”

Houston took the 4-2 win over Blinn in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader behind a seven-strikeout performance from pitcher Summer Groholski. The Grapeland, Texas, native carried a shutout into the seventh inning before a single and home run cut the deficit in half but the righty was able to get the final three outs and give Houston the win.

Leadoff batter Katie St. Pierre gave Houston the initial lead by drawing a walk and swiping two bases to get into scoring position. A ground out by Kayla Holland allowed St. Pierre to score and the duo linked up again in the third. This time Holland double to left center scoring St. Pierre from third after she stole her third bag of the game.

Juniors Sydney Gerbracht and Alexis Weaver each added doubles in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Gerbracht reached base all three plate appearances with a hit by pitch, double and single.

The Cougars scored one, two, three then four runs to win 10-0 in five innings during the second game.
Julana Shrum tossed four shutout innings before turning the ball over to Diedre Outon in the fifth for the combined shutout.
