Softball Pitchers and Catchers Report to First Practice of the Year
Jan. 6, 2010
HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball pitchers and catchers reported to the first practice of the year in preparation for the Cougars' season debut in mid-February. "The first day went well," head coach Kyla Holas said. "I was glad to see everyone back. We had some injuries that were a big concern, but it looks like people are on track with their rehab, and that takes a big load off our minds. We're excited to get through this week and start full team practice on Monday." Juniors Amanda Crabtree and Baillie Lott return to the mound for another year. Joining the pitching duo this season is freshman Bailey Watts. Sophomore Melissa Gregson reported to practice as the only returning catcher. Freshman outfielder Reina Gaber and junior infielder Lauren Strickland switched things up when they tested their skills behind home plate. "I've seen a big improvement since the fall," assistant coach Abbie Sims said. "The girls have overcome some injuries, which now allows us to focus on getting back into pitching shape. Our goal is to perfect our timing and get our arms and legs together." After the first day of practice, the coaching staff is optimistic towards the season. A lot of their confidence derives from the seasoned returning pitchers. "We're the most experienced on the mound, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what our pitchers can do this year," Sims said. For the first time since fall, the team unites on the practice field on Jan. 11. The Cougars will be hard at work before they welcome Ohio State, Louisville, Kansas, Baylor and Sam Houston State to the Cougar Softball Stadium for the Marriott Houston Hobby Classic on Feb. 12-14.
