    Oklahoma City, Okla.--The University of Houston softball team ranked 16th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 pre-season poll, which was released Tuesday.

    The Cougars were ranked 12th in the final ESPN.com/USA poll following the 2008 season after they fell to Louisiana-Lafayette in the Super Regional final, 4-0.

    Also ranked in the poll are 2009 Cathedral City Kickoff opponents, No. 14 California, No. 12 Fresno State.

    Seven teams on the Cougars' 2009 schedule are ranked in the pre-season poll, including No. 14 California, No. 12 Fresno State, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 2 Alabama, No. 19 Missouri, and No. 8 Louisiana-Lafayette,

    Six opponents are receiving votes (Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Hofstra, East Carolina and Texas).

    The Cougars finished the 2008 season with an 8-7 record against ranked opponents.

    This is the second preseason poll released for the upcoming season. Last week, USA Today/NFCA preseason poll was released, where the Cougars found themselves ranked at No. 13.

    UH opens the 2009 season in with the Cathedral City Kickoff in Cathedral City, Calif., where they will play No. 17/14 California (Feb. 6 at 12 p.m.), UC-Riverside (Feb. 6 at 2:30 p.m.), James Madison (Feb. 7 at 2:30 p.m.), No. 14/12 Fresno State (Feb. 7 at 8 p.m.) and Oregon State (Feb. 8 at 11 a.m.).
