Houston Softball Loses Back-to-Back at UH Invitational
HOUSTON, TEXAS - The University of Houston softball team dropped two in a row at the UH Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon at San Jacinto Field on the campus of San Jacinto South. The Cougars were defeated by Northwestern State 4-1 and fell to Illinois-Chicago by a score of 9-3. The Cougars are now 4-7 on the season.
In its first game of the day UH got on the board first, scoring its only run in the top of the fourth when freshman catcher Arelis Ferreris hit a sacrifice fly to send freshman third baseman Lindsay Durham in for the score. Though Houston held Northwestern State scoreless for five innings, the Demons would explode for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Cougar offense managed just four hits in six innings of action.
Lindsay Durham got UH off to a red-hot start in its second game of the day blasting her first-career homerun in the bottom of the first, but Illinois-Chicago would answer and score five runs in the top of the second. Though Houston scored two more runs in the bottom of the second to gain on the Flames, UIC would rally for another run in the top of the fourth, two runs in the top of the sixth and its final run would come in the top of the seventh.
The Cougars are back in action Sunday, February 18, in the tournament's final day of competition to face Stephen F. Austin in consolation play. First pitch with the Ladyjacks will be at 8:00 a.m. from the campus of San Jacinto South.
