Huntsville, Texas - The University of Houston softball team posted seven runs on the strength of 10 hits to defeat Sam Houston State 7-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Houston built a 4-0 lead through four innings and stretched the margin to 5-0 after the top of the fifth, but the Bearkats fought back for three runs and even had the bases loaded with no one out in the bottom of the fifth before UH would score two more runs close out a 7-3 final. It marked the third time this season that the Cougars have slugged 10 hits.
Two of the 10 hits were home runs, Houston's eighth and ninth of the year. In the third inning junior transfer Ali McDougall hit a two-run homer to center to make the score 4-0. Two innings later freshman Arelis Ferreris knocked a solo shot also straight-away centerfield.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Falco picked up her third win of the season after working seven complete innings. The native of Tomball allowed three earned runs, scattering six hits and walking only one while striking out a career-high 12 batters.
Houston improved to 6-13 overall while Sam Houston State fell to 8-7. The Cougars are next back in action February 28 as they take on Texas A&M in Houston. First pitch will be 7:00 p.m. from Baseball USA.
