HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball program heads to Oklahoma this weekend to take on the No. 1 Sooners on Friday and Sunday with a doubleheader in Stillwater against OSU on Saturday.
- Houston embarks on their first road trip this season with a four-game set scheduled in Oklahoma.
- UH outfielder/hitting coach Kristin Vesely returns to familiar territory this weekend as the assistant coach was an All-American for the Sooners from 2003-2006. Vesely still ranks No. 2 in the Sooner record books in hits (293) and doubles (53), fourth in batting average (.367) and holds a Top 10 spot in many other categories.
- Holly Anderson has had four hits in a game twice this year already and paces the club hitting .415, good for second as an individual in C-USA and the Cougars are No. 1 as a team, hitting .286.
- The last time Houston played in Stillwater, Houston fell (1-2) to Oklahoma State in the Super Regionals.
LAST TIME OUT
Houston concluded their 13-game homestand to open the 2013 season this week by splitting a pair of midweek games against Houston Baptist (W, 8-0) and UTSA (L, 2-3). Against the HBU Huskies, Houston scored four runs in the sixth inning for their third run-rule victory of the year as HBU committed three errors in the final frame for the decisive score.
Fortunes changed for UH against UTSA, as the Cougars' miscues resulted in the win for the visiting Roadrunners. Houston managed only four hits and drew no walks for the first time this year and let the tying and go-ahead-run come through to score on a dropped pop fly that would have ended the inning.
ON THE COMPETITION
Oklahoma (15-0) has already toppled seven other ranked teams as the 2012 NCAA runner ups are holding the No. 1 poll spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll and No. 2 place in the NFCA list.
OSU recently went 2-3 in the Mary Nutter Classic to even their record at 7-7 on the season. Tarah Ettinger leads the Pokes in batting average (.415), home runs (1) and RBI (7). OSU has used just two pitchers this year with Kat Espinsoa, who has faced Houston four times before, leads the staff with 60.2 innings.
Houston is 4-2 all-time against the Cowgirls with both losses coming in the 2011 NCAA Super Regional held in Stillwater. Houston shutout OSU last year 3-0 at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic in the second game of the 2012 season.
UH is 1-4 all time against the Sooners with the lone win coming in 2004. This is the first time the two teams have met since 2009.
