BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Lady Eagles dropped a 3-2 softball game to Houston in the opener of LSU's Purple & Gold Challenge. Southern Miss held a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but a rain delay halted the contest for five hours.
With runners on second and third when the game reconvened, Arelis Ferreris singled through the right side, scoring Riane Netardus. Two batters later, Keri Kubala singled up the middle to score Leslie Seay for the eventual winning run.
Jenny Johnson went the distance for the Cougars, giving up three hits and striking out nine. It was Johnson's second win on the season.
Houston got on the scoreboard first, when Ferreris singled home Seay in the bottom of the first. The Lady Eagles captured the lead in the top of the second with Sarah Boyd scoring from third off an errant throw to second in an attempt to throw out Heather Bell who stole the base. Robbi Roberson followed with an RBI double to right, scoring Bell.
Sarah Boyd lined a shot to the centerfield wall in the top of the fourth, picking up her second hit of the day, but the freshman was stranded along with Amanda Brown who walked.
Southern Miss could not reach the base paths after the fourth as Johnson put out the last 11 batters of the game. The Lady Eagle fall to 11-7, losing two in a row.
Melissa Cundiff pitched six innings, giving up six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Due to the rain delay, the schedule of the Purple & Gold Challenge has been revised. The following is the updated schedule for remainder of the tournament:
