March 3, 2014
HOUSTON - The Houston Softball team played to a 6-1 loss facing North Texas Monday evening at Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston falls to 10-7 on the year while North Texas improves to 13-5.
Houston struck first when Selena Hernandez hit a home run to straight ahead center field putting Houston on top 1-0. The home run was the fourth of the season for the sophomore and she went 2-for-3 at the plate contributing half of Houston's four hits.
North Texas answered with a three-run rally during their next turn at bat. Starting pitcher Summer Groholski (4-2) took a comebacker off her hand and had to come out of the game during the second inning. UH turned to Diedre Outon to finish off the frame but not before UNT plated the difference.
UNT added insurance runs in the fifth and two in the sixth for its starting pitcher Ashley Kirk (8-2) as they posted their first against UH in program history. The series now tied at 1-1.
The scheduled doubleheader was abbreviated to a single game for Monday evening due to the North Texas travel schedule. The second game will not be made up this season.
