Softball Opens Up 2012 Season This Weekend

March 11, 2009

HOUSTON-- University of Houston Associate Athletics Director for Communications and five-year softball liaison Chris Burkhalter has been selected as a member of the NCAA Division I Softball Committee to represent Conference USA from September 2009 to September 2013, as announced Tuesday.

"I am excited to have someone so knowledgeable about this sport be able to represent our conference," head coach Kyla Holas said. "We need a strong presence fighting for all the teams in our conference to legitimize this conference nationally. I think Chris will do a great job and I am happy for him and C-USA."

Burkhalter has been an official liaison for Houston softball since 2005. He was a part of the search committee who looked for a head coach and found Holas and helped with the inaugural Cougar softball season in 2001.

Burkhalter's duties as part of the NCAA Softball Committee include developing and reviewing agenda items for the annual meeting, setting up regional advisory committees for the upcoming season, attending the entire Women's College World Series and attending selected preliminary rounds such as the 16 regional sites or eight super-regional sites.

During championship season, Burkhalter will assist in evaluating teams throughout the season, participate on numerous regional and national conference calls and assist other committee members with the selection of teams and the creation of the bracket.

Ten members make up the committee including one from each of the eight regions and two at-large.

As the administrative liaison to the softball program, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the program including budgets, scheduling, game management, facilities and operations and postseason event coordination.

Burkhalter began his sports information career as a graduate assistant at Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana, Lafayette). He earned his master's degree in European history from USL in 1992 and received his bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Texas State in 1989.
