Cougars Sweep Hilton Houston Plaza Classic

March 15, 2010

HOUSTON - After sweeping Southern Miss in its Conference USA opener, the University of Houston softball team rides a six-game winning streak into Tuesday's midweek doubleheader against North Dakota State. First pitches are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.

This will be the first meeting in program history between the Cougars (13-9, 3-0 C-USA) and the Bison (14-9, 0-0 Summit League). Houston looks to take advantage of North Dakota State's shortcomings on the road as the Bison have posted a 1-4 record away from Fargo.

Junior Angela Spittler leads the Cougars with a .371 batting average after going 11-for-15 last week. The College Station, Texas native hit her first collegiate home run in game two of the Southern Miss series. During that contest, she batted 1.000, driving in two RBI in addition to scoring three runs.

Junior Amanda Crabtree is coming off a successful pitching run as she improved to a 4-4 record. The Kingwood, Texas native threw a career high of 14 strikeouts en route to a 4-3 win against Southern Miss in game one. Crabtree pitched two complete games in the opening C-USA series including the final game of the sweep, which was a two-hit shutout. Earlier in the week, she pitched her first one-hitter of the season to claim a 3-1 win against Monmouth.

Infielders Nicole Rivera and Melissa Chmielewki will present a challenge for the Cougars. Rivera leads the Bison with a batting average of .438 and 35 hits, while Chmielewki slugs .771, collecting 36 RBI off 30 hits including five home runs.

Freshman Whitney Johnson (9-7) leads the pitching staff with a 2.72 ERA, fanning 113 batters over 105.2 innings and limiting opponents to a .202 batting average.
