Cougars Strand 10 Runners in One-Run Loss
HOUSTON, TEXAS - The University of Houston softball team Cougars held Louisville in check four three innings, but the Cardinals rallied for five runs in the top of the fourth and another pair of runs in the top of the eighth to claim a 7-6 victory in the finale of the three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at Baseball/Softball USA in Houston.
Houston built a 5-0 lead with five early hits including a two run home run by freshman catcher Kim Cote, but the offense struggled in the second half of the game. The Cardinals, meanwhile, got to the Cougar bullpen for the second time in three games and UH will now meet Southwest Texas State for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon with a 1-2 conference record and a 12-21 record overall.
The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the first after a double by freshman rightfielder Lindsay Durham and a two-run home run by junior shortstop Ali McDougall. UH then added three runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-0 as the Cardinal defense allowed two hits and committed three errors. It looked like it might be enough for Houston first-time starter Allison Thompson, who allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings of work during her collegiate debut, but Louisville would weather the storm.
UL went on to tie the score 5-5 after scattering three hits in the top of the fourth. Louisville then extended the lead with a two run shot to leftfield by Keola Calderon. UH tried to rally in the top of the eighth with a solo home run to left-center field by Durham, but the Cougars were unable to get runners on base.
Houston fell to 12-21 overall while Louisville improved to 22-11. The Cougars next face Southwest Texas State on Wednesday, March 28, for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
