No. 9 Softball Prepares for Pair of Midweek Match-Ups

HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team will test itself against he best in the world, taking on the USA National Team April 8 at 7pm at Memorial Park. The game, played on Field 1, is part of a 46-stop Bound for Beijing tour to prepare the USA National Team for 2008 Summer Olympics. Following the game, Houston will play host a doubleheader against UTSA on April 9. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m., with the second game to follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The Cougars split two games with UCF in Orlando, Fla., on April 5-6. The final game of the series was called due to rain. Houston is 10-1 in Conference USA and 32-5 overall this season. Junior Laurie Wagner has a team and league-best batting average of .423. The team batting average of .319 leads the league. In the circle, senior Angel Shamblin has a team and league-best ERA of 0.69. The pitching staff, including senior Barbie Love and freshman Baillie Lott, has a combined 1.10 ERA, which paces C-USA. The Cougars are holding opponents to a combined .168 batting average this season. About the USA National Team The two teams have five common opponents, including UCF, Baylor, Louisiana-Lafayette, DePaul and Virginia Tech. Following the exhibition against Houston, the USA National Team will face North Carolina on April 10. About UTSA Danye Holmes leads the Roadrunners with a .367 batting average and also leads the team with a 2.50 ERA. She is 5-5 in the circle this season. In their last outing, UTSA lost three games in a series against Texas State on April 4-5. The programs have eight common opponents this season, including Texas, UTEP, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, McNeese State, Baylor, Nicholls State, Texas State and Sam Houston State. The Roadrunners are 7-10 against those teams with a series against Sam Houston State left this season. Houston is 8-0 with Baylor and UTEP remaining on the schedule. Houston had to cancel a doubleheader against Sam Houston State due to weather. Those games have yet to be rescheduled.
