Houston Softball Team Beats South Florida 4-1
HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team received another solid performance from a freshman pitcher and used the strength of six hits to post a 4-1 Conference USA win over South Florida Sunday afternoon at Baseball/Softball USA in Houston. With the victory, the Cougars claimed the three-game weekend series 2-1 and improve its C-USA record to 4-5 and its overall record to15-24.
Houston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when rightfielder Lindsay Durham slugged a two-out single that scored the two runs. The Cougars stretched the margin to 4-0 with two more runs in the fourth after Arelis Ferris reached on a double and scored off of a Kim Cote single. Two batters later, centerfielder Candice Turnbo would also single to drive in Cote.
UH starting pitcher Jamie Falco was steady from the very beginning, allowing USF just one hit until the fifth inning. The right-hander from Tomball surrendered just four hits, struck out four and had no walks. South Florida scored its only run of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh when Ginny Georgantas reached on a Cougar fielding error that would also score Renee Oursler who had tripled to rightfield earlier in the inning. The UH defense would rebound, and after a standard ground ball to the third base, Houston effectively held off the Bulldogs to claim a 4-1 final.
