Five Cougars Earn Conference USA Honors

May 9, 2012

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Houston softball team landed three members of the squad on the 2012 Conference USA First Team as the league office announced Wednesday. Haley Outon, Holly Anderson and Melissa Gregson represented Houston on the First Team All-C-USA squad as Jennifer Klinkert (Second Team All Conference) and Jaime Edwards (All-Freshman Team) also picked up season honors.

Outon, a sophomore from Pflugerville, Texas, set school records for home runs (20) and RBIs (59) in a single-season as she paced the Houston slugging efforts. Outon logged every single inning for the Cougars in 2012 behind the plate and ranks No. 7 in the NCAA in home runs.

Anderson, a junior from Dickinson, Texas, helped set the Houston offense from her leadoff position and led the team in batting average (.374) and tied Outon for the team lead in runs at 44. She also fielded every inning at her position, third base, for UH in 2012 and finished second on the team in steals (18).

Gregson, a senior hailing from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., landed on the First Team for the second straight year by batting .358 and starting all 54 games for Houston with 52 starts coming in left field. Gregson was third on the team in home runs, runs and batting average behind Anderson and Outon.

Both Gregson and Anderson honored their preseason selections on the All-Conference Team. Outon was selected to the 2011 All-Freshman C-USA team last season as Gregson and Anderson were repeat selections.

Jaime Edwards, a freshman from Austin, Texas, was named to the All-Freshman team despite missing the final nine games of the year after suffering a season-ending injury at Tulsa. Edwards finished her rookie campaign with a .325 batting average, five home runs including two grand slams, and started at first base from the first inning of the year.

Klinkert, a senior from Chino, Calif., led the team with 11 doubles and paced the NCAA in sac flies (7) as she was named to the Second Team. The senior second baseman also doubled her career stolen base totals this year, swiping 12 bases, to help Houston rank No. 2 in the league in that category.

The No. 5 seeded Houston Cougars face No. 4 UCF in the opening round of the C-USA Championship Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
