HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team was announced as the recipient of the 2009 Impact Award for Community Service Group, as announced by the Board of Directors for the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The Impact Award for the Community Service Group is presented to an organization that embraces the foundation's promise to end breast cancer forever.

Organizations chosen to receive the award are recognized for their exceptional contributions in one or more of the Affiliate programs and overall positive impact in the community to enhance breast health awareness.

"(This award) speaks volumes of where this program has gone, not only in competition or the classroom, but also in the community," Associate A.D. for Communications Chris Burkhalter said.

"This is a very well received award by the softball program and of course head softball coach Kyla Holas. Each year we look to do the campaign bigger and better. I have had the fortune to lead the campaign for them because it is right in the middle of their season

"It fits right into where Kyla and the program like to be and it is just another step in establishing this as a Top 25 program."

The Cougars have donated more than $25,000 to the foundation after three years of their annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game. One hundred percent of the proceeds, including a silent auction with the player's helmets and jerseys worn during the game, are donated to the foundation.

This season, Houston donated $6,943.50 to the Houston Affiliate after playing Texas A&M in the Third Annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game.

Burkhalter and Holas will attend the 2009 Annual Awards Luncheon to receive the award and be recognized by the Affiliate on Friday, June 26.
