HOUSTON - University of Houston's Haley Outon was named a Third Team All-American as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced Wednesday afternoon.
Outon led the Cougars in home runs (22), RBIs (64), runs (49), batting average (.368) and slugging percentage (.805) in 2012. Her home run and RBI totals set a single season school-records for the program.
The sophomore catcher tied an NCAA record with a home run in six consecutive games. During that span, beginning on May 1 at UTSA and ending May 11 vs. Tulsa, Outon batted 14-for-21 (.667) with 14 runs and 14 RBIs. Houston went 5-1 down the stretch to end the season and reached the postseason for the second-straight year. Outon was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week (May 7) for her efforts.
The Pflugerville, Texas, native finished No. 7 in the nation in home runs (0.37) and RBIs (1.08) per game en route to being a First Team All-Conference selection as well.
"I'm so happy for Haley," head coach Kyla Holas said. "She has worked so hard everyday since the end of her freshman season to become this and I am glad it paid off for her and the program. She is a big part of our current success and the future goals we have yet to meet. Her future is bright and I am glad she is a Cougar.
Outon also went 10-for-11 in stolen bases while opposing teams went only 13-for-22 against the strong right arm. She recorded every inning for Houston behind the plate this year, also catching two no-hitters.
