HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball program was awarded the Conference USA Sport Academic Award, announced by Commissioner Britton Banowsky this week.
The Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the 2011-12 academic year.
The Houston softball team finished with a team-record 3.50 GPA, besting last year's high-water mark, as the program under head coach Kyla Holas continues to produce record marks on the field and in the classroom.
"I am extremely proud of our team especially our seniors who helped establish this environment and pride in both athletics and academics," Holas said.
"The biggest thanks for this award goes to Lori Selzer our academic counselor and her staff. They are an integral part of our program and without them, this would not be possible."
Houston capped the season by advancing to the NCAA postseason for a second-straight year and finished with a 35-22 record.
