Houston Adds Two for 2018

HOUSTON -- University of Houston Softball Head Coach Kristin Vesely announced the additions of UTSA transfer Lindsey Stewart and prep star Alex Jones on Monday afternoon.

"We are excited with the additions of these two student-athletes to our talented roster," Vesely said. "Both are proud Houston-area natives and will add power and speed to the depth of our program. Stewart and Jones have strengths that we will need to continue to build our legacy."

Stewart (OF) and Jones (C) join an already strong 2017 class as the Cougars signed Aspen Howie (2B/SS), Caela Kincade (SS), Meagan McCarver (OF), Tierrah Williams (2B/RHP/UTIL) and Charese Wyatt (3B/SS) in November. All seven additions hail from Texas.

Stewart is a 5-5 outfielder out of UTSA where she played her freshman campaign in 2017. With the Roadrunners, she started 52 games between outfield (29) and designated player (23), leading the team in batting average (.394), on base percentage (.424), hits (74), stolen bases (22), runs (34) and fielding percentage (.984).

Stewart led all freshmen and finished second overall in Conference USA with 74 hits. For her efforts, she was named to the All-Conference USA First Team and All-Freshman Team.

A native of Pearland, Texas, Stewart was a four-year letterwinner at Pearland High School. For her career, she hit .475 with a .507 on base percentage, 64 RBI, 146 runs scored and 116 stolen bases. Stewart was a two-time All-Greater Houston Area pick, three-time NFCA All-Region selection and four-time All-District and Texas Sports Writers Association All-State honoree. She led Oilers to three district titles and four playoff berths.

She played club for Texas Hotshots and was a teammate of Presley Bell.

Stewart will have three years of eligibility remaining and is eligible to play immediately for Houston.

"Stewart has already proven she can compete and succeed at the Division I level. She fits our recruiting mold with her athleticism and ability to steal bases. She adds a left-handed stick and will help the team with her ability to get on base. I cannot wait to see how she competes in our program and what our team accomplishes in 2018."

Alex Jones
5-10 | C | St. John's School/Breakaway Speed | Houston, Texas

Jones is a 5-10 catcher out of Houston. She was a four-year letterwinner at St. John's School and played club for Breakaway Speed. Jones was a three-time All-Southwest Preparatory Conference selection and two-time All-South Zone honoree.

Serving as team captain her senior year, she posted a .518 batting average with six home runs. As a junior, Jones helped lead the Mavericks to a SPC Championship.

She has continued to improve on the field throughout her high school years. She will bring a level of commitment and leadership that will help our team this upcoming season.
